Community Education and Outreach: The Shelter is engaged in outreach efforts throughout the Rabun County community providing education programs to advocate humane treatment of animals, to encourage vaccinations and proper care for pets, and to educate citizens about the consequences of overpopulation, such as diseased and feral animals. Last year, over 120 school children in Rabun County were introduced to adopted “ambassador dogs” and their volunteer owners who visited their school to educate students about the importance of taking responsibility for one’s pets and caring for them (and all animals) humanely. In anticipation of the expanded outreach opportunities afforded by a new facility, the Shelter will include a Teaching/Learning Center so that programs can be hosted on site. The Shelter staff anticipates that the new facility will allow them to quadruple capacity for school programs to 500 students per year. Community outreach efforts are already underway to identify new school groups, 4-H clubs, Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, garden clubs, senior centers, and other organizations that can benefit from the community education programs being developed by the Shelter. The Shelter’s Teaching/Learning Center will provide adequate space to offer pet-training courses and seminars for pet owners in the community. The Shelter is considering ways to develop work/study apprenticeships for local high school students. In addition, future programs could include collaborations with corrections officials seeking non-profit partners for supervised rehabilitation programs. Vaccination program: In addition to making vaccination services available to private pet-owners among the general public, the Shelter will seek outside grants to subsidize a program to spay and neuter animals. Contracted veterinarians: The BMHS has engaged The Rabun Animal Hospital, P.C. and the services of local veterinarians, Brad Smith, DVM, and Stephen Arbitter, DVM. Dr. Smith and Dr. Arbitter are experienced in medicine and surgery with large and small animals.
